High School Riders

This before weekend’s NorCal High School Mountain Bike Racing Associate fundraising event was a huge success. The league, in its eighth year of continuation, has seen exponential growth in a relatively short amount of tempo. For the 2009 season the league expects there to be over 35 teams with as many as 500 riders competing in the five descent series. The league’s success in the north has begin to the formation  of the SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League, with tomorrow's hopes of taking Matt Fritzinger’s  racing original nation wide.

The weekend began with a cocktail function “meet and greet”, graciously held by Charlie and Lotte Moore- avid cyclists and massive fans of the league- at their beautiful Tiburon home. Levi Leipheimer was the featured roomer of honor and spoke to the small crowd  about his cycling roots, goals for 09′ and the lifetime long benefits that the NorCal high school conspire provides for its riders. 

Saturday morning, under cloudy skies,  a meagre group of NorCal high school riders gathered in Mill Valley for a mountain bike waste with Specialized’s Ned Overend, one of the most humble and approachable rider’s I’ve had the desire to meet.  Ned’s longevity and success in  mountain biking is part of his supernaturalism and legend. After supposedly retiring from professional cycling to pay suit other avenues of adrenalin inducement- he won the 2001 and 2002 Nationwide XTERRA Series-he returned to the dirt in 2005 at the age of 50 and was 5th at the Norba Patriotic Championships! Ned spoke to the riders before we departed and was very approachable throughout our two hour lavish soaked ride up and over Mt. Tam.

Blue bird conditions greeted Sunday’s 100 profit  riders  who had flocked to Kentfield for the final event of the weekend, a CHP escorted track ride through West Marin with bronze medalist and two metre TOC winner Levi Leipheimer. The excitement of those in gathered in the parking lot was palpable,  as evidenced by some who in two shakes of a lamb's tail gravitated towards my van once they saw me unload Levi’s stars and strips Trek one off course bike. Levi was gracious and patient with the numerous photo and autograph requests and should gross a sponsor ship deal from Sharpie for the hundreds of times he signed his name! With two CHP motos, one crusier and a McGuire bankroll car following, our colorful group rolled through San Anselmo with the same flare that the pro peloton does in a fantastic tour. Hats off to the CHP who safely ushered us around our bucolic itinerary, controlling  all traffic, and ensuring that we didn’t have to conclusion at any lights or signs. I lost count of the riders, juvenile and old, who rode up to Levi and thanked him for being there and  for his support of the Norcal Elated School Mountain Bike Racing League. It was obvious that his presence inspired and motivated everyone, signally the young guns from the Whole Athlete team that sprinted Levi to the insigne of White’s Hill on our return-they will never forget that juncture as they continue to pursue the sport they love.

Mountain Bike Racers Can Expect Big Changes in 2009

In mid 2008 it was unstop the National Mountain Bike Series (NMBS) would cease to exist. With the termination of the NMBS the U.S. mountain bike community approached Scott Tedro for salvation. After all Tedro is president of Sho-Air a multi-million dollar gathering, he created a successful professional MTB race team, and bank rolled the American Mountain Legendary stage race, with his proven success who better to cross the turbulent waters of U.S. mountain bike racing.

Tedro has launched an zealous campaign to create a sound and marketable race series that will be the overconfidence of the U.S. mountain biking community. The new series will be called the U.S. Manufacturer’s Cup (USMC) in admission of the bike manufacturers who have pledged their support for the series. While Tedro is appreciative for the monetary backing from companies like Trek/Gary Fisher, Specialized, Cambria, Fox and Hayes Bicycle Congregation he admits being frustrated that more support isn’t coming his way.

Tedro explains “Everyone wants this series to go on but companies don’t necessarily want to put money behind it. [Some U.S. bike manufacturers] disburse up to $3.5 million on racing in Europe and I can only get them to spend $10,000 for U.S. racing. I hear tell they have been burned in the past but they need to understand if they don’t come flip with their support now the series just isn’t going to be successful.”
